Ebay is an online auction website founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar, which allows people to buy and sell goods worldwide. When Omidyar initially set-up the site as ‘auctionweb’ he was suprised when he sold a broken printer online, he asked reminded the buyer that the printer was broken and he was informed that the chap was a collecter of broken printers. This incident sparked the creation of ebay.

Each user on ebay acquires feedback when they sell or buy an item, depending whether the person on the other end decides to leave feedback. Feedback is useful in determining whether you should buy/or sell a product to a person. Feedback is recordered as a percentage value.

Ebay can be joined for free and buyers only pay for the item once they have won for an item. I will take this opportunity to make it clear that if you do not have the money, and decide to bid it will result in you getting negative feedback and perhaps even loosing your ebay account.

Although it initially costs nothing to become a seller on ebay, you will have to supply your bank details and allow ebay to take seller fees by direct debit. As a seller you pay a listing fee (starting from 5p and then a percentage commision known as the final value fee.)

Personally I have sold and bought many items on ebay and the problems I have encountered are misadvertising, prices rising above the shop price due to competition between bidders and some of my friends have been scammed. However if you are sensible and always check the item description elsewhere, ebay is a irreplacable tool for particularly for buying items that it would be difficult to find in high street shops.

For several years, eBay has been my most frequented place for goods, in an internetty metaphysical kind of ‘frequenting’ obviously. The main reasons I’ve used eBay over the years have been:

- Get things cheaper
- Get rare things

The advantages of eBay to a buyer are obviously a lower price and plenty of information on the condition of a product- whether it’s new or used, obviously this depends on the seller’s info but I’ve never seen a deceitful description. I still buy off eBay, and have become very used to the time it takes before brand new products come down in price.

I love ebay. It is easy to register and then sell or buy practically anythihng that is legal. Everything that they don’t allow ebare does (but that’s another story).

I managed to get a trampoline for my daughter’s 5 th birthday from a powerseller on ebay. For £159.99 pplus £60 delivery we got a 14ft kogee (the best make out there) trampoline with safety net, ladder and weather proof cover thrown in for free. Everyone has been so impressed with it, even our relatives have now ordered one for their daughter for Christmas.

I have bought, computer parts, labels, gameboy advances, recently got a bagatelle board for my dad for Christmas, was £10 when it is £99.99 in pastimes mail order catalogue!!!

Guess where I’ll be getting most of the Christmas shopping done this year!

It is for this reason you need to check seller’s feedback ratings to give you an idea of how reputable they are - although this is no guarantee.

You need to watch shipping and postage and packing charges as some people overcharge.

As long as you set yourself a limit you should be able to get a good bargain.

Ebay is an auction website. Items which can be bought or sold here range from a pin to a house. Only registered members can participate in the auction and/or sell goods.

I am an active member of Ebay, I mainly buy goods, particularly books and CDs and also sell some stuff, mainly CDs.
The registration process takes about 15 minutes, but if you do not have a Paypal account, you will need to have one as well since most sellers accept Paypal payments.

There is a search engine to find the items you wish to buy and from the main page you can go to the option “My Ebay” and here you can either select “sell” if you wish to sell or “buy” if you wish to buy.

If you buy, there is a listing fee of at least 15 pennies and Ebay will also take a commission of the final price, which can be in between 3.5% and 5.5%

In my experience, I got some good deals, I sent money already twice to people who did not send me the good and make a run, on one occasion I recovered them via Paypal. I also had a problem with one seller who did not honour his winning bid. Ebay is a bit of a mixed bag, but if you have time, you can get good deals. It is time consuming though, no doubt about this!
